Our Favorite Contemporary Kitchen Design Projects

When it comes to transforming your kitchen into a modern marvel, contemporary kitchen design stands out for its clean lines, innovative materials, and functional elegance. If you’re a homeowner in Dallas, TX eyeing a kitchen makeover, you’re going to love this post!

Let’s dive into what contemporary kitchen design entails, and how it differs from modern design, and highlight some of our favorite projects that might inspire your next remodel.

What is Contemporary Kitchen Design?

Contemporary kitchen design is all about the here and now. It’s not tied to a specific period; instead, it evolves with current trends and technological advancements. Think of it as a dynamic blend of functionality, minimalism, and aesthetic appeal. Key features include clean lines, open spaces, and a mix of textures and materials. Whether it’s the use of high-gloss cabinets, integrated appliances, or smart storage solutions, contemporary kitchens are designed to be both stylish and practical.

Modern Kitchens vs. Contemporary Kitchens

It’s hard to compare modern vs. contemporary in the kitchen space these days because the lines between the two are often blurred. Modern design is rooted in a specific era, particularly the mid-20th century, and is defined by clean lines, minimalism, and a focus on natural materials. Imagine the sleek, understated furniture of the Mad Men era—perfectly straight lines and functional simplicity that bring a sharp, defined look to a space.

On the other hand, contemporary design is more fluid and organic, reflecting the latest trends and what’s happening in the design world right now. Contemporary furniture and interiors are constantly evolving, adapting to the newest styles and innovations. This approach often includes bold, sweeping, and curved lines, offering a more dynamic feel.

Interestingly, many of the projects we consider “contemporary” are heavily inspired by mid-century modern design. Depending on who you ask, these could easily be labeled as “modern” kitchens. However, they are distinctly updated with trending materials, colors, and the latest technology, making them firmly contemporary. So, while modern kitchens might adhere to the principles of a bygone era, contemporary kitchens are always in the present, incorporating the latest innovations to create a space that is as functional as it is fashionable.

We’re excited to share with you a few highlights that showcase the versatility and beauty of contemporary design.

Contemporary kitchen design project #1 The Mid-Century Modern Revival

Project #1: The Mid-Century Modern Revival

Our latest contemporary space is a stunning example of how mid-century modern inspiration can be brought to life with a contemporary twist. The “tuxedo style” kitchen features walnut base cabinets paired with striking blue uppers, creating a bold yet sophisticated contrast. Stainless steel appliances, sleek white quartz countertops, and a crisp white backsplash give this kitchen a professional, almost commercial feel—perfect for those who love to cook in style.

Project #2: The Award-Winning Two-Tone Wonder

This NKBA Texas North Plains 2020 K+B Award-Winning Design showcases how contemporary kitchens can blend different materials and finishes to create something truly special. This two-tone kitchen is the pulsating heart of the home, with a main cooking island and a prep wall that offers ample space for culinary adventures. The second island, a mix of white, grey, and walnut materials, offers seating for the whole family—complete with a short grey table for the kids and a taller walnut top for adults to sip wine while dinner is being prepared.

The cabinetry here also follows the tuxedo trend, using Cabico Elmwood New Haven door style in walnut with a natural matte finish, paired with white cabinets in a high-gloss finish over the sink. The Caesarstone countertops in Frosty Carrina and Raw Concrete add a touch of elegance, while the custom walnut top crafted by the homeowner adds a personal touch. A stunning backsplash from Marble Systems, featuring their Mod Glam Collection, completes the look with a polished snow-white finish and brass accents.

Project #3: The Cook’s Dream Kitchen

If there’s one thing we love, it’s creating kitchens for those who love to cook, and this NARI North Texas CotY 2021 Award-Winning Remodel is no exception. The homeowner, a passionate cook, found that his previous kitchen just wasn’t up to the task. So, we stepped in to create a space that is both functional and stylish, with a swanky tuxedo look using Ultracraft Cabinetry.

This kitchen features Caesarstone Quartz countertops, which are both stain and scratch-resistant—perfect for the serious cook. The backsplash is a sleek, large format subway tile that reduces grout lines, giving the kitchen a clean, open appearance. Gold hardware and plumbing fixtures add just the right touch of luxury, making this kitchen a joy to work in.

Project #4: The Entertainer’s Paradise

This 1950s kitchen was holding back our client’s love for cooking and entertaining. The layout was inconsistent with the home’s mid-century architecture and didn’t provide the functionality needed for hosting 6 to 12 people regularly. To remedy this, we reimagined the kitchen layout to create a more open and inviting space.

We expanded the kitchen by adding larger openings to adjacent rooms and a third entry point into the living room. A massive peninsula was introduced to manage the sightline between the kitchen and the living room’s large brick fireplace. This peninsula not only serves as a focal point but also provides seating for up to six people—perfect for entertaining.

The cabinetry was meticulously designed to maximize storage and ensure ergonomic appliance placement. We reconfigured the layout to create clearly defined zones for cooking, prepping, and cleaning. The oversized island, wrapped in elegant walnut paneling, adds a touch of sophistication while providing ample space for both preparing meals and hosting gatherings. This kitchen is now a stunning showpiece that perfectly blends style with functionality.
