Kitchen Design Trend #3: Going Green

Mary Kathryn and Jennifer of Kitchen Design Concepts with a representative from Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity/ReStore

A trend that we gladly support is going green! You can do this in a variety of ways, but a nice way to go green when remodeling is to donate your old and unwanted appliances and kitchen materials. Our clients are oftentimes replacing materials and appliances that are still usable with fixtures and furnishings that are more up-to-date and in line with their overall design and remodel plan.

So, in 2008, we contacted Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity. With their help, we started a program whereby our clients’ used materials could be donated. The items are in turn sold through their retail outlet called ReStore and 100% of ReStore’s proceeds then benefit Dallas Habitat’s mission to put more people in their own homes. It is truly a win for all. Our client receives a receipt from Habitat which provides a tax benefit to them, folks in the community benefit from buying used items at a reduced cost, and those serviced through Habitat benefit from the sales of ReStore while they realize their dream of home ownership. The program has been so successful that we now encourage other remodelers to take our challenge to do the same in their communities. Please let us know if you start a program like this in your community!
